The Romanovs – 6 July 1918

Counting down to 17 July 1918 when the family was murdered.

On 6 July 1918, King George V and Queen Mary were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. How close had Alexandra come to becoming Queen of entire differently country? If only Queen Victoria had had her way. Nicholas and Alexandra would not make it their 25th wedding anniversary.

In Yekaterinburg, several showers during the day had brought a bit of coolness into the stuffy Ipatiev House. Yurovsky had returned a stolen watch to Nicholas, which he had found in one of the service rooms downstairs. He also returned a silver spoon with the Imperial crest, which had been hidden in the garden after being stolen. Two women had been sent to clean the floor of their living quarts. Nicholas had begun reading volume seven of the complete works of Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin and Alexandra was allowed the rare luxury of a bath. Yurovsky replaced the old Colt machine at guard post number 9 in the attic with a faster and efficient Maxim gun.1
