While Mary was continuing to gather support, trouble was brewing in the Tower of London on the sixth day of Lady Jane’s reign. The people began to revolt, crying for Mary to be made Queen and Jane then ordered the gates of the Tower of London to be locked each night and the keys to be brought to her.

Outwardly the council remained loyal to Jane. They wrote to sheriffs and magistrates in her name, affirming her possession of the crown and adding that the Duke of Northumberland had gone to suppress the Lady Mary’s rebellion.
