The Romanoffs is described as “A contemporary anthology series set around the globe featuring eight separate stories about people who believe themselves to be descendants of the Russian royal family.”
I recently watched the first and second episode of this new series. The first episode focusses on an elderly racist woman who is confronted with a new Muslim caretaker and her nephew who is seemingly waiting for her to die so he can finally have her grand apartment. The second episode focusses on a middle-aged gloomy man who throws himself into jury duty while his almost estranged wife goes on a cruise they had planned before the jury duty, where she meets others who claim to be of Romanov descendant.
From the trailer on, I did not have high hopes for the series and unfortunately, the first two episodes have done nothing to raise my hopes. The only thing that has anything to do with the real Romanovs is the opening sequence which portrays the shooting – albeit very unrealistically. This series could have easily been made without the Romanovs. The first episode has one redeeming quality as the storyline between the caretaker and the nephew is quite pleasing eventually. The second episode absolutely bored me to tears.
I do not think that I am going to bother with the rest of the episodes. Such a shame, because the Romanov story could really use an excellent retelling.
