Details of the upcoming ceremony today are being kept secret, but work has already begun in St. Catherine’s Chapel at the Peter and Paul Cathedral where the rest of the family of the last Russian emperor rests. Access to the chapel is closed and in front of is a large picture showing the inside of the chapel, with Alexei’s and Maria’s names on the wall, except there is still a place where the date should be carved.

The ceremony is set to take place today.

UPDATE: The burial may now be conducted in February, says Russian State Archive head Sergey Mironenko.
