Born Margareta Eriksdotter on 1 January 1516 at Ekeberg Castle, she was the daughter of Ebba Eriksdotter Vasa and Erik Abrahamsson Leijonhufvud, who was executed in the Stockholm bloodbath when Margaret was only four years old.
