Nothando Dube was a former Miss Teen Swaziland, and she met King Mswati III in 2004 at a birthday party for one of his children. She became his twelfth wife in 2005 when she was just sixteen years old. They went on to have three children together: Princess Makhosothando Dlamini, Prince Betive Dlamini and Princess Mahlemalangeni Dlamini. She was placed under house arrest after reportedly having an affair and was prevented from seeing her children.
Her burial will take place today.
The death follows shortly after the apparent suicide of the King’s eighth wife Senteni Masango last year – she left behind two young daughters. At least two of the King’s wives have fled from him, leaving behind their children. He reportedly has 15 wives and at least 23 children. King Mswati III was selected to become King at the age of 14, and he officially began his reign at the age of 18. Queen Dzeliwe Shongwe and his mother Queen Ntfombi Tfwala, both wives of his predecessor and father King Sobhuza II served as regent while he completed his studies. He was crowned King on 25 April 1986. On 19 April 2018, King Mswati III changed the name of the country to Eswatini. This marked the country’s 50th anniversary of independence.
