The former Imperial Palace in Brazil, which had served as a museum since 1892, has been destroyed by a massive fire. Most of their collection of more than 20 million has probably been lost.
The destruction of the building is an “incalculable loss for Brazil,” President Michel Temer said in a statement. “Two hundred years of work, research and knowledge were lost.”
The building, then known as Saint Christopher’s Palace, served as a residence for the Portuguese Royal between 1808 and 1821 and as a residence for the Brazilian Imperial Family between 1822 and 1889. Queen Maria II of Portugal, her sisters Princess Januária, Princess Paula, Princess Francisca, her nieces Isabel, Princess Imperial of Brazil and Princess Leopoldina were born in the Palace. Queen Maria’s mother, Maria Leopoldina of Austria died there in 1826. After the Proclamation of the Republic in 1889, the Imperial family left the country.
