Last weekend I visited Schloss Marienburg in Pattensen, Germany. Mainly because I wanted to the ‘Path to the Crown’ Exhibition. This Schloss was a birthday present from King George V of Hanover to his wife Queen Marie of Saxe-Altenburg.

Unfortunately, photography was not allowed inside. We went on a classic tour with English audio guides, even though the cashier asked me why I needed it since I asked for it in German (ha!). I especially liked the library and the hall.

Path to the Crown exhibition

The Path to the Crown exhibition is a separate tour. An audio guide is also available but I decide to bring it back since I was able to follow the German tour guides quite easily. I did really dislike needing to go on a tour in the first place, especially since it’s an exhibition. It has small rooms and then you’re just standing there, not really able to see anything because the rest of the group is in the way. The exhibition is mostly paintings (lovely ones), pictures to show the line of succession, some interesting items (a letter from Queen Victoria to consent to a marriage) and of course the crown jewels.

The crown jewels are pretty but not quite as big as I imagined. The Princess Crown is tiny. There is no extra information listed with the items so you’re relying completely on the tour guide. He was nice, but I was missing some information.

It would be better if you could just go around the exhibition yourself and if they would just list information with the items. They seemed a bit overwhelmed with the number of people as well.

Overall, it’s a lovely castle, but the mandatory tours are annoying and inconvenient. The exhibition is fun to see, but quite small.
