Rumpenheimer Palace and its hidden graves

The construction of the Rumpenheimer Palace dates back to the 17th century. When the area of Hanau came into the possession of the Hesse-Kassel family, the Palace was expanded. It was used as a residence by Mary of Great Britain, Landgravine of Hesse-Kassel until her death in 1772. On 25 July 1797, Princess Caroline of Nassau-Usingen gave birth to her daughter Princess Augusta of Hesse-Kassel there. Augusta went on to marry into the British royal family and became the wife of Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge. On 11 September 1832, it was the site of the wedding between Princess Marie Luise Charlotte of Hesse-Kassel and Prince Frederick Augustus of Anhalt-Dessau.

Princess Margaret of Prussia and her husband, the future Frederick Charles, Landgrave of Hesse, used the palace as their main residence during the early years of their marriage. Several of their sons were born there. The palace is now in use as apartments and can no longer be visited.

Hidden on the other side of the park is a church, which was closed. However, as we walked around we noticed a small graveyard.

Buried there are:
1. Caroline of Hesse (1811-1829) Daughter of William, Landgrave of Hesse and Princess Louise Charlotte of Denmark
2. Frederick William, Landgrave of Hesse (1820-1884) Husband of Anna of Prussia
3. Sophie of Hesse (1827-1827) Daughter of William, Landgrave of Hesse and Princess Louise Charlotte of Denmark
3. Wilhelm (1844-1844) Stillborn son of Prince Frederick William of Hesse-Kassel and Grand Duchess Alexandra Nikolaevna of Russia
4. Marie Polyxena of Hesse (1872-1882) Daughter of Prince Frederick William of Hesse-Kassel and Anna of Prussia
5. Alexander Frederick, Landgrave of Hesse (1863-1945) Son of Prince Frederick William of Hesse-Kassel and Anna of Prussia
6. Gisela, Freiin Stockhorner von Starein (1884-1965) Morganatic wife of Alexander Frederick, Landgrave of Hesse
7. Louise of Nassau-Usingen (1763-1845) Daughter of Charles William, Prince of Nassau-Usingen and Countess Caroline Felizitas of Leiningen-Dagsburg
8. William, Landgrave of Hesse (1787-1867)
9. Charles of Hesse (1789-1802) Son of Frederick, Landgrave of Hesse and Caroline of Nassau-Usingen
10. Louis of Hesse (1791-1800) Son of Frederick, Landgrave of Hesse and Caroline of Nassau-Usingen
11. George of Hesse (1793-1881) Son of Frederick, Landgrave of Hesse and Caroline of Nassau-Usingen
12. Louise of Hesse (Countess von der Decken)(1794-1881) Daughter of Frederick, Landgrave of Hesse and Caroline of Nassau-Usingen
13. George, Count von der Decken (1787-1859) Husband of Louise of Hesse
14. Frederick, Landgrave of Hesse (1747-1837)
15. Caroline of Nassau-Usingen (1762-1823)

Across from the church was a mausoleum, which was being used for events. It was unclear if there are still people buried there.

The gardens around the Palace are free to visit and you can walk all around. It is right by the river and it is really quite nice.
