The University of São Paulo is to exhume to bodies of Isabel, Princess Imperial, her husband Prince Gaston, Count of Eu and her parents Pedro II of Brazil and Teresa Cristina of the Two Sicilies. All four are buried in the Cathedral of São Pedro de Alcântara, Petrópolis, Brazil and will be transferred to the Hospital das Clínica. Princess Isabel’s body is believed to be embalmed, which is viewed with optimism by researchers as they hope the body is well preserved.
The bodies will be subjected to a battery of tests, such as CT scans and magnetic resonance imaging. They will be analysed by radiologists, pathologists and other specialists.
The University previously exhumed the remains of Pedro I of Brazil and his two wives, Maria Leopoldina of Austria and Amélie of Leuchtenberg. They were surprised to find that the body of Amélie had been mummified. This particular study was conducted in secret between February and September 2012 and was not revealed until February 2013.
