I’ve visited the ‘new’ Loo Palace last year during the Grace Kelly exhibition. This year I went back as this time Loo palace was the host of the largest Sisi exhibition outside of Vienna. If you want to know what Loo Palace looks like on the inside, I’d like to direct you to this post from last year.
The Sisi Exhibition costs an extra 3 euros. I’ve been to the Sisi Museum in Vienna and I was a bit disappointed with this exhibition. It’s informative, but most of the stuff wasn’t even real. Replicas were used for basically everything. I really liked the coach and the timeline at the beginning of the exhibition but I just felt like it was missing something. Guess you can never get the true Sisi feeling without going to Vienna (despite the fact that she hated it there!).
Also on the list was the Old Loo Palace. This palace is on the same grounds as the ‘new’ Loo Palace but you can only get to it in April and May when that part of the park is open. The Old Loo Palace is still being used by the Royal Family which explains why that part of the park is blocked off 10 months of the year. It was even used by the Crown Princely Couple of Japan for a few weeks while Crown Princess Masako recovered.
It certainly has that gorgeous medieval look to it.
The castle was built in the 14th century and was bought by William III of Orange (also King of England) in 1684. He had the ‘new’ Loo Palace built on the grounds. It was also in the hands of King Louis Napoleon of Holland, who filled the moat because he was afraid of drowning. The moat was restored by Queen Wilhelmina. It has been owned by the state since 1968 but the Sovereign still rents it. This is also the reason why it’s not open to the public.
The Old Loo Palace is worth a visit, even if you can’t go inside. It’s just so pretty!
